How microplastics are making their way into our farmland

Microplastics are a pervasive global environmental issue, found in various environments like air, water, and soil.

Recently, Canadian researchers have discovered that treated wastewater sludge, known as municipal biosolids, contains a high concentration of microplastics, with hundreds of particles in a single gram.

 

Although wastewater treatment plants remove around 90% of microplastics, they still end up in biosolids. Given the substantial production of biosolids in Canada, exploring new technologies in wastewater treatment plants for microplastic removal is crucial.
