Qualtech expansions signal a Canadian hygienic equipment powerhouse

Expanding in-house capabilities and opening facilities in Western Canada, integrator poised to offer design, custom builds and integration of hygienic equipment in Canada.

This article is related to the Canadian food manufacturing industry. Alfa Laval's food grade sanitary equipment (Pumps, Valves, Tank equipment, installation material, Heat Transfer and Separation systems) are used in dairy, food and pharma plants across Canada.  

Qualtech Inc. has completed two major expansions in Canada in recent years. The company has also added  unique capabilities in-house, ones that are not commonly offered by most integrators.  

What is behind these expansions is interesting to Canadian food manufacturers and engineering companies designing, integrating, or purchasing hygienic manufacturing equipment in Canada.  

Qualtech is moving far afield from its original customer base and locations in Quebec. The first of the expansions was moving company’s headquarters next to the Goodyear building in Quebec City. This increased the area available for large in-house productions to 63,000 square feet.  

West coast ambitions 

The second expansion established a local facility for the company in Calgary. Being nearer to manufacturers the company is already servicing in western provinces lets Qualtec leverage it’s shops across Canada in unison. The company is approaching a coast-to-coast presence: five shops in Quebec, one shop in a distribution centre in Ontario, a facility in Calgary opened a year ago and a facility opening planned further out west.  

A new service level in Canada 

Qualtech’s V.P. of Business and product development, George Anton states the company’s intent is “to offer plant operators in Canada a single source option that’s missing in Canada. His goal is to offer “a single source supplier for everything related to hygienic equipment”.  

Apart from adding locations, the company has built up some interesting capabilities in-house recently. The company has grown its team to 30 engineers and 22 technicians. The in-house expertise includes: programming automation systems; engineering design; gasket and extrusion storage; custom tank building; repairs – all from a single company.  

Qualtech gained an ability to both bid to customer plans, as well as to design and execute its own integration projects. For Canadian manufacturers who prefer single-vendor equipment, this will be a new level of service in Canada and a welcome ability to purchase turnkey projects.  

Complex Installations 

Qualtech invested in the ability and space to build storage tanks for their projects in-house. This allows the company to install systems into complex manufacturing plants. They also carry a complete wash equipment range to allow a maximum of options in challenging duties. 

Qualtech has started doing custom product designs when it sees gaps in equipment manufacturer offerings. For example, the company started developing a unique part washing system to fill their washing equipment range with an intermediate level option. The company developed the concept through 3D renderings, animations and part sourcing – in house. 

For manufacturers that prefer the sole sourcing model, Qualtech is making the possibility of dealing with one company for all hygienic equipment matters - a lot more real.
