Vancouver's new emissions bylaw aims to reduce carbon emissions from buildings

In another step towards sustainability, Vancouver is the first Canadian jurisdiction to enforce limits on building emissions, with fines for owners whose buildings exceed the limits. The bylaw targets large commercial offices and retail buildings and aims to reduce emissions by 50 percent by 2030 and 100 percent by 2050.

Building owners are encouraged to take low-cost building tune-up actions to comply with the bylaw, and the city is focused on helping owners reduce emissions rather than collecting fines. 

 

“The building industry has been driving all this time without a speedometer,” says Alex Lau, vice president of Golden Properties Ltd.
