Humber College uses digital twins to make buildings smarter

At Toronto’s Humber College, a smart system maximizes efficiency by cooling and heating buildings during off-peak hours and with heat pumps that redirect heat from crowded spaces to other areas needing heating. Another system turns on lights in rooms only when people are using them.

With these smart technologies (and other energy efficiency initiatives), the college is on track to achieve a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared with a decade ago.

“Having the separate systems share information with each other is making the buildings run as optimally as possible,” says Aman Hehar, Humber’s associate director of energy and climate change.
